Legacy Traditional Schools – Arizona proudly recognizes Mishel L., an eighth-grade student at Legacy Traditional School – Gilbert, as Student-Athlete of the Month! Mishel is a standout example of the qualities Legacy encourages in every student: academic excellence and strong character. Mishel is a leader on and off the court, serving as vice president of the National Junior Honor Society, earning Principal’s Pride recognition, and competing on multiple CAA athletic teams.
Inside the classroom, Mishel is known for her thoughtful engagement and dedication to learning through curiosity, which enriches the learning environment for those around her.
“Mishel approaches her academic responsibilities with diligence,” said Ms. Ocalsa, who teaches geometry and eighth-grade science. “She consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and a desire to learn. Her engagement in class discussions and willingness to ask thoughtful, clarifying questions set a strong example for her peers.”
As a student-athlete, Mishel exemplifies the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. She is co-captain of the girls’ basketball team and is respected by teammates and coaches for her leadership.
“She encourages her teammates, communicates effectively, and leads by example,” her coach shared. “Whether in practice or during games, Mishel is consistently focused, prepared, and gives her best effort.”
Balancing academics, athletics, and student leadership roles is no small task. Yet, Mishel manages these responsibilities with humility and discipline – consistently demonstrating what it means to lead with purpose and character.
“She is intrinsically motivated,” said Ms. Ocalsa. “Her academic discipline, curiosity, and leadership qualities make her a model student-athlete. She is an inspiration to others and a joy to have in class.”
Mishel’s work ethic and commitment to excellence exemplify what is possible when students set high goals and stay true to their values. We look forward to all she will continue to accomplish in the classroom, on the court, and beyond.
